Being on this and still being fairly new to tractors. I often wondered about some comments on tractors and what they ment when saying. "Brake it apart" or split in two!
Well today OLD or Rich come bye my home and picked up my Case Tractor. The clutch was not acting right or slipping it is called. He took it to his garage and while I watched he "Split it in two as they say or broke it apart.
This being done in less then 2 hours! WOW! Clutch out and pressure plate out to! Now I did try to help but found I was just in the way and found me a chair and set down and watched it all. Real interesting to see my tractor done like this. I will pick up a new clutch and pressure plate and throw out bearing it is called. Within the next 7 days. Do not know how my tractor even pulled it's self. It was down to them rivets I think their called on pad. So next time one of you tractor people are saying they are going to do this to their tractor are did it already. I will know what they are talking about. *S "Never to old to learn I guess." *S

Going to Kansas City Mo. In morning for clutch and stuff in reply to Larry59, 03-26-2008 20:14:51
Well found me a fine deal on a clutch at KC clutch rebuilders company. For 62.00 and the pressure plate for only 80.00. Now on the pressure plate they did not have one for me. But will rebuild mine tomorrow with new springs etc. They said should be done in about 4 hrs. So while in Kansas City I will visit my kids and goof off till it is done and come home. I live about 3 hours away. Then Saturday I will soon have my tractor going again.

I just finished my first "tractor split". I had to replace the clutch in my Ford 800 series (single clutch). I can assure you it took a LOT longer than 2 hours for this first-timer!

But, hey! I got it back together and it actually works!

I was ready to cuss you out Jim--Sorry after a second look I did notice a bottle jack under the front end. Look where the hook from your cherry picker seems at first glance to be. I seen a guy wrap a chain around the total front end once and bent the heck out of the gas tank. NOW THAT WAS THE VERY FIRST THING I THOUGHT I SAW, then the hook on the steering wheel, then the bottle jack. Just went and cleaned my glases and all is well now so I will just shut up and wait for the snow to stop.

No problem. Maybe you pointing out that potential error will help some other first-timer avoid that disaster.

I got cussed out a bit over that and John Smith even posted a scanned factory bulletin telling Ford dealer servicemen to hook the chain to the steering sectors when lifting from an overhead point. I corrected my hookup points after reading that even though the bottle jack was taking the majority of the load.

Larry, I have my 310 split right now to replace the rear main seal, clutch throwout bearing, and maybe flip the ring gear while I am at it.

My clutch plate is the one at the link below, probably the same one you need. Type in p/n G11077 at the part nr search box at the top of the page to get a look at it and the tractors it fits. If the plate is not warped & the splines are not dinged up, best way to go is a reline. Last one cost me $50, included ups 2 ways @ 70 mi & auto parts store profit, pretty cheap for this area.

Make sure the notch is not worn off on the face of the throwout bearing, needs to turn when engine is running or will wear pressure plate fingers and release fork. Main reason I have the 310 split this time.

Old has been around the block on this kinda thing more than a few times but if you guys need a pix of something for a looksee, holler. I probably won't get buttoned up until the weekend.

Joe

If you watched them closely, they next time you split your tractor you can do it yourself. I am not a mechanic and did not even farm until I was 52 and started dabbeling with old tractors and farming. Have split a few old Cases to do clutches and rear mains or transmission seals since then. Last summer I was mowing my road bank with my 300 case. All Of a sudden I had no clutch. It was completely gone. This happened right in front of my neighbors house and he was watching. I told him clutches go gradually, not just all of a sudden in one second. Besides, I had put in new clutch plates (2 in series) just last year when I bought the old girl and got it going after setting 15 years. The clutches were rusted together and the tractor would hardly come apart. Well anyway, I took it straight back to my shop and split it again---- had it seperated in one hour. When I had split it before I had not noticed the (Fork) proper term? bolt had rusted and just broke into and would not release the clutch. I dug through my parts drawers and found a New old stock fork and bolted it in. Ond and one half hours later I was back in front of my neighbors house mowing again. He asked me what was wrong with my tractor. I told him I just had to split it and fix the clutch. He just shook his head. Did not believe a word of my clutch story.

Oh it was interesting.. But all I can do is watch cause of disabilities I have these days. But still interesting. Today would have been about and hour to. But that steering had been beaten on at the spine and deformed the end of spline so it would not come off. Will keep that fork info on bolt in mind for down the line case it should happen to me that way. Thanks

Ya and if that steering had come apart like it should it would have been more like an hour to have it split. LOL. Boy what a pain that steering was

Lol yes... never seen one come off that hard before. I was not forsure you was going to get it to brake free at all. Also that was about and hour working on that one part. Least it's apart now. Joe on other site mention this .. info Larry, as near as I can tell from your post you are looking for a clutch plate and a pressure plate, is that right? The shaft that drives off the engine clutch plate is called a "clutch shaft" and sometimes a "engine pto shaft". It is splined at the clutch plate and on the other end (transmission end) just aft of the clutch shaft bearing at the hand clutch pack on your tractor. It appears the vendor is trying to ID the clutch shaft so they can provide a 9-1/4" clutch plate with a spline count & diameter that matches your clutch shaft. The clutch shaft for the 300B series is p/n G10365 before s/n 6097696 and p/n G17201 s/n 6097696 and after. I think the 9-1/4" single clutch plate (standard p/n G11077 or heavy duty p/n G11079)is the same for both but if the vendor can't figure it out from the shaft p/n's go somewhere else. The least expensive repair is to reline if your existing plate is in decent shape. The pressure plate is a different animal, it is splined to accommodate the hydraulic pump drive shaft. I wouldn’t try to do any generic matchup there.

Yes Larry relining your clutch disk is an option. Springfield clutch and brake could maybe do that but not sure the cost. I'll have to try to remember to ask them when I call them tomorrow. Now as far as the pressure plate they also maybe able to rebuild it and surface it and install new springs since the ones in your pressure plate seem to be weak.

I also called O'reillys to see what it would cost to have the flywheel turned and they said $45. That price doesn't seem right so I'll talk to one of my trained people tomorrow to see if thats the right price of some one not wanting to tell me the truth. Also did I wear you out by you watching me LOL

I know I still have lots to learn and will learn what I can. For I read articles on here that have nothing to do with my type of tractor. But knowing some stuff. Perhaps I will need to know it one day are maybe just help another person out like me. Have a great night. *S

How fast I type... slower a bit now in reply to Old Roy agiin, 03-26-2008 20:31:10
I use to type 60 words a minute. Still do about 40 to 50 words , I think it is. For I learned years ago how to type. Use it in my work for reports that the courts would need on criminals to send to prison. But now that I got older my memory on spelling can cause a problem. Then sometimes a type error as it is called. LOL Oh well.. can't stay young forever. lol
