Ok I learned that putting my dt 466 in my dodge ram 1500(1998 4wd automatic) isnt a good idea because that engine is just too heavy and big. I also have a 3 liter 5 cylinder mercedes diesel. How hard would that be to put in. I understand that it would be easier just to buy a truck with a cummins already in it, but i want a fun project to work on. Any ideas? Where can i get a bell housing adapter? etc?

While the 4BT or 6BT would be the easiest because then you could use all factory Dodge parts which are easier to find and assemble than making something yourself it's just not as fun. The 466 would make a lot more sense to install than a 4 cyl or even a 6cyl Detroit. It's lighter than a 6-71 and has more horsepower, torque, more efficient, starts better, is more reliable, is still in production (read not obsolete) and they still make parts for it which some series Detroits parts are getting hard to find. Plus at the end of the day you won't want to dig your ears out with a spoon and have low end torque. I just don't have confidence in an engine that from the factory, Day 1, is rated to leak/burn a gallon of oil every 10 hours.
Factory ratings

6-71 238hp and 650ft-lb

466 up to 300hp and 860ft-lb

Swapping it in there would be the same amount of work if it was a 3/4 or 1ton since they have the same body, just heavier frames. To get the 466 in you will need to make some custom motor mounts, do firewall modifications to get it to sit far enough back that you can have a radiator under the hood. You may have to beef the fame in the front to handle the weight. Increase your front suspension, I'm sure the CAD Dana 44 front axle won't see the humor in the added weight, at least your unit hubs won't like it that much. Easiest way would be to find a 5 or 6 speed Allison and put in a divorce mount transfer case if you want to keep it 4x4 (which I assume you would) I have actually seen this conversion done and 8.3 C-Series Cummins engines put in pickups, it is possible.
If you want to go Mercedes I would try wilcap.com they have a lot of strange combination of adapters to make just about anything work for anything else.
Good luck.

If the 3L Mercedes is not turbocharged, you probably don't have enough engine. Check the torque@peak torque rpm figures against the 318, if it isn't close you will probably be disappointed. Otherwise you will probably want different gearing and lower profile tires.

"Advance Adapters" specializes in engine/trans.
adapters, and has a nice catalog, for about $3
that has all kind of charts/ information on
doing that, but I don't know about Mercedes.
They advertise in 4 Wheel Drive & Off Road Magizine, probably have a web site.

There is a reason that no one makes a 1/2 ton diesel. I'd think twice before I put all that time and effort into a 1/2 ton p/u.

Cummins 4bt is probably the easiest Diesel conversion. They are in just about every delivery truck out there and enough people are putting them in vehicles so conversion parts are available. If the 318 in my 1500 ever goes I might consider that swap.

For your Mercedees engine, springs can be beefed up and motor mounts can be fabricated. Flex-plates for the clutch and adapter plates for the stock transmission might be tougher to find.

Also if it's '96 or newer, your state might have some emmissions issues with you using a non-OEM engine.

If you do it, post back, we're all interested in how it turns out. Good luck.

by the way that 466 is what Ford should have put in their f-250 and bigger. Then we might still be in the Ford family at work but the junk they are trying now is ridiculous 6.0 , 6.4 = JUNK

If you want a reral diesel find yourself an old two stroke Detroit and mate it with an Allison. Do that and you"ll have one heck of a tow rig. had a friend with an old Suburban that had a 4-53 Detroit backed by a two speed Allison and it was a pulling fool, not to mention it had that distinctive Detroit sound that you don"t hear that much anymore. As for your question about the Mercedes, if parts for them are as hard to get all the time as I"ve experienced lately you don"t want to do that. I"ve had turbo gaskets for a larger V8 Mercedes on order from the dealership for nearly 2 months now. They are finally supposed to be in sometime this week but I"m not holding my breath. Whatever you decide have fun and good luck.

I agree with NCWayne

If you want to make a statement and get noticed, the only engine is a Detroit. Perferably a 3-53 or 4-53. You won't need a radio because you won't be able to hear it at any speed. They are available on eBay frequently. I have had a 4-53 in a '47 1.5 ton International since the early '70's. The front end needed a few more spring leafs.

About the same time I put a 220 Mercedes diesel in a '32 Ford pickup. That is the four cylinder version of the 300. I made an adaptor out of 3/4" aluminum plate. I used a '39 Ford tranny. The front end was adequate.

I know a guy that put a cummins in a 1500 so you should be able to put better springs in it and be ok.that dt466 is a International engine right

A DT 466 is found in anything over 1.5 tons. They're found in schoolbuses today, and if you've ever flipped the hood open on a schoolbus, there's no dang way that thing's fittin' in that Ram.

Buy a 2500 with a cummins in it.

with a body lift I bet it will but alot of workhad to think about it for a sec but that is the engines that are in our INL. 4700 with 6 plus trans. The trans is a joke for a heavy truck because it don't have 2 speeds but the engine is economical even in the 4700s loaded down pretty heavy. the length may cause some issues but the height of the 466 would be more the problem. with a saw, torch, hammer, welder, and sailor's thesaurus I bet it can be shoe horned in
