Field looked dry from road so I went and got fert. and buggy yesterday thinking I can spread for spring wheat today here in south central Mn. Well this morning at sunup I walked out into field and determined it is still to wet. Close but not yet. Maybe tomorrow as it is warm, sunny and windy today so it should change alot. My experiance has told me you will never get top yield if you don't get spring wheat in by april 15. I don't care what kind of growing season you have. Here in S mn. it has to be in before the 15th.

Neighbor just started pre-plant Anhydrous today, and I saw some field-cultivated dirt a few miles from me. It's windy as all heck, sunny, and 70 degrees out. Things'll dry quickly. This is N. Illinois.

Plant it here before the 15th of May and you will almost always get it frozen.

Thousands of acres of spring wheat get frozen every year in Manitoba, but very rarely does it do any significant damage. Mostly our soil stays cold long enough that there is no advantage to seeding before May 1 unless being the first one done is considered an advantage. In 1999 I seeded wheat on June 20 (too wet) and it still made a decent crop. In 1981 I had wheat in on April 20th.

I think you are kidding but the U.ofM. says if you could plant all your corn in one day that day should be May 1st.
