Ok got a question for all you veterans of lawn mower field service.

My phone has hardly stopped ringing with calls for me to come service people's lawn mowers. I love doing and who wouldnt mind the extra $. Now here is the problem, most of these people I can't say, " Ok whats the make model & serial number?" they just dont know the lingo or where to look and would think I was trying to steal there credit or something. So how would you go about knowing what filters, plugs, plug gaps etc. to get ?? I was thinking maybe just make a TSC run and stock up on a few different sizes of each, kinda like my grandpa's plumbing truck had every fitting you could ever think of.

Cant wait to here some great ideas.

Thanks Tom

never count on a "customer" to give you accurate info- they mean well, but you'll need/want to verify it yourself anyway. Mine rarely know their own tire size, and usually can't find it or read it off correctly. Had one lady call looking for tires for her husband's FISO. Huh? FISO...it's a truck. I'm thinking it's some Dihatsu type deal, so I tell her to bring it by so I can check the size.
It was an F150....

so...buy cheap, stock up!

This being early spring, most of your mowers probably have sat all winter with the old gas in them, that will more than likely be the bulk of your problems. I'd have some fresh gas on hand, if the TSC is close by I wouldn't stock up on a lot of filters and I'd get a box of Champion J19lM plugs, they are preset to .030. You will no doubt be covered up very shortly and they will want them repaired right now cause "my grass is up to my hind end and I need it". Good luck and enjoy. Oh get a case or 2 of 30w and 10w30hd. I'd recommend to always change the oil and plug and usually the filter. If the blades are wore out or splitting replace them for sure.

Every mower service around here makes the customer haul in their own mower or pay for a trip on the trailer if its a rider. And dont expect to see it for 3 weeks if you are lucky. i am glad i can fix my own. But i digress, anyone who expects you to do calls on a mower repair should also absorb your fuel and wear and tear on your truck.Way too many plugs and parts and filters to expect anybody to carry all that plus tools.

If your phone is ringing that often, you could ask them to bring you the mower. I would think that a couple cans of seafoam and 20 different types of plugs would get you by. Not many mowers are 8 cylinder!!
