I have a 1979 CJ5 that has served me well for years. Recently it has started to want to try to jump out of 3rd gear when slowing down. Are these 3 speeds very difficult to rebuild? Could it possibly be something that would'nt require a complete rebuild? I have the 6 cylinder model.

Sounds like the shift dogs are worn out. Easy to fix, just get a Jeep manual for that trans and make sure you know what type it is. T-150, T-18, T-176, T-4, etc...

4 wheel drive will have parts
Quadratec is also a good parts place.

I have a BW T-5 I put in my '77 Bronco and it was a little over 4 hrs to R&R it.

I had a local shop do mine on my M38a1(military CJ5) with fair results. I think the synchronizers should have been replaced, but weren't, they did look OK. Popping out of 2nd is common on those old T90 tranny. Google "Herm the overdrive guy" I have heard good things about him and prices look good.
