Have this splitdorf on a 29 D. When the tractor is running there is a spark between the main cap and the cap that covers the points. Is this sopposed to happen.

Your best bet for information is to go to the John Deere forum on this site or go to johnnypopper dot com and see if you could raise Duane Larson. Ifanyone would know about your mag and the exterior spark, he would. The exterior spark should not be present, and is causing the plugs to fire when the valves are open. I don't think I would run the tractor any more until you get the situation under control. Would hate to do any damage to the engine. If nothing else, burn the valves. How to correct the problem is another story. Get 'hold of Duane and see what his thoughts are.

I'm no mag expert, but I understand how it works and that copper wire just may be a safety spark gap to protect the high voltage winding and other components. Might not be a wise move to tamper with it - especially its position. If it ain't broke, don't (try to) fix it. Just my humble opinion.

If you want to see it running its on U tube under John Deere D running its posted by TractorMuseum. Its kind of scary when flames and smoke come out the intake side.

Colton, Your mag timing should be set up to fire left cyl ,fire right cyl miss, miss than 1,2.etc. It could be cross firing or looking to fire to ground on the miss which could cause it to fire back on 1&2 on open valve. Are your plug wires a good wire, with good soldered terminals on mag & plug end ? Not the automotive type resistant wire. Earl

Its got the right wires with soddered ends and they are new. That is how it fires. It likes to shoot flames out of the air cleaner and I hope this is why, I may be getting a small spark when the intake is open, I hope its the problem.

Try spraying the caps down with clear acrylic, TOP COAT, paint. I have had good luck using this to seal mags which draw moisture.

Probably carbon tracking.Elect. is folowing a small crack with carbon dust in it.If it bothers you get a new cap,if you can find one. Hoss

I pulled the mag apart last week and everything is new, except it looks like its an old recharged magnet.

This is not the actual magneto, the one I have is rebuilt and looks a little nicer.

Any kind of external, visible sparking would not be normal.

Thats what I thought, when I pull the cap off there seams to be a thick copper wire about a half inch long coming out of the cap and it almost touches the cover on the points, this is were the spark is coming from.

I don't have any experience with that age of magneto. What does that thick copper wire do? If nothing, then get rid of it.

Is the ground wire (to shut the tractor off) connected correctly?
