I have a 10 month old dairy heifer that wants to nurse. Never had this problem before, I always teach the calves to drink from a pail at a week old or less. Will putting a ring in her nose stop her? Any other way to break her of the habit or should I just send her to the auction barn?

Thank you for the replies. I've been dairy farming for years but never had a "sucker" before. Always felt getting them on a pail early prevented it. Thanks again.

We have a 2yr old holstein that is a sucker. We put on a plastic nose spike on her,it only took about 4 or 5 minutes and cost 6 bucks. She still tries to suck but can't get the teat in her mouth. If that ends up breaking,I will likely move to the steel flap type, depending on how long the plastic one actually lasts. She is GP 81 pts and making over 80 pounds a day,so as long as the ring works and she is no trouble,I will not be culling her,it is just a stupid habbit, not as if it is a genetic failure.

Try a nose ring some times they work sometimes they don"t. use the one with the spikes.

We've had siccess with a metal nose ring. Suggest that you avoid the spiked ones, as they can lead to injury both to the cow she's trying to nurse, and the hefer. Cow will tend to kick, and the spikes can lead to puncture wounds, etc.

Once she gets a taste of fresh milk you will not be able to keep her away from the cow. She has to be separated or sold. There are nose spikes you can use but a lot of effort and not always successful. Mitch
