I've got a 92 F-150 with the 4.9L engine and an automatic tranny.

She sat for most of the winter without being run. Now, she won't start. Battery checks good, but when I go to start, all I get is a click.

I'm thinking it's either the solenoid or the starter. Or is there a relay for the starter under the hood somewhere? What's the smart way to troubleshoot this?

I'm just beginning the process of getting all the gas-powered equipment running again after the winter.

Hello blue
1:Check the battery for the proper voltage post to battery post 12.6V @ 70 Degrees F.
2: While some one is trying to start the engine check the voltage at the battery. It should drop with the load but not below 9.6V at 70degrees F. 2: Check for the same reading at both battery clamps.
3: While someone trying to crank the engine, check for voltage at the solenoid side of the starter.
4: Check for voltage at the starter's battery cable. 5: Check the voltage at the starter stud.
Any volt meter you have will be fine.
If the battery drops below t 9.6V listen for starter noise or growl. If the brushes or commutator are bad it may drag the battery down
below the 9.6v even if it is a good battery.
You can touch the cable going to the starter, and if it gets hot you may have a bad starter.
Do the checks one step at the time.
All of these checks is for an engine that is not cranking. I guess that is what you have?
Good Luck!
Guido.

A common fault with Dorfs of that era was for a poor connection to develop between the lead (+) battery cable TERMINAL and one or more of the cables encased inside it.

check the ground , where your battery ground bolts to the starter,

My F150 with the 4.9 engine takes a HUGE battery. I've tried to jump it from other cars and jeeps, but they don't have the umph to do it. I'd say your battery is probably not up to the task.

Don't just wire brush the battery post take a knife and clean them back to silver lead color also the clean the cables the same way if you hear a crackling noise that's your problem.
A good test is to turn the head lights on if they are bright then hit starter if they dim a lot or go out its your connections.

You should fully charge that battery and then use a hydrometer to check specific gravity of each cell. Should read 1.250 or better and if one reads 1.100 discard the battery. A new solenoid is about $5.00 I just one on my garden tractor. Hal

The first thing is the battery cables , make sure they are clean and if you have a volt meter check the battery. It should be 12.5 volts or more. If it still don't start check the connection on the solenoid, it should be on the fender just behind and to the left of the battery. If it still won't start it could be the connection on the starter. The solenoid can be jumped across if it is bad but if your not familiar with it I don't recommend it.
