I bought my first Ford it is a 3000 model with live pto and 8 speed trans. It is not a bad tractor even if it is not green but you can not engage the pto while running. It will just grind, the only way to use the pto is to start it with the pto engaged. Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

Had a few of those 3000's with stuck PTO clutches, Only way to fix them is to split the tractor. Dave

Sounds like the second stage of your clutch is out of adjustment. By any chance does the clutch linkage have 2 holes in it? When the clutch is adjusted correctly, the forward most hole is used to lower the pedal when the PTO is not needed. The rearward hole should be used when the PTO in use. Also when the clutch is properly adjusted, the drive will not begin to engage until the pedal is more than half way to the fully raised position. The picture below is the linkage on my 3000, it shows the linkage in non-PTO mode. Hope this helps.
