Your old unit would be a "Cutout-Relay" not a regulator. The purpose of the Cutout Relay is to connect the generator to the battery while the engine is running and disconnect when the engine is not running. If your are having a charging problem, you can connect a jumper across the cutout relay with the engine running. If it charges with the jumper installed, the cutout relay is faulty. Other wise the problem is a bad generator or a problem in the field circuit. Connect a jumper from the generator field terminal to chassis ground. If it charges, your field circuit is faulty. The field circuit controls the generator output rate. The field circuit is a wire from the field terminal to the light switch. The light switch has two positions, "H" and "L" representing high and low charge rate. In the "L" position, a resistor mounted on the back of the light switch is placed in the circuit. On the light switch will will also find a second resistor coil. That's for dimming the head lights. For a new cutout relay, try Delco 1116766. K-Mo
