Separating a 1066 between transmissions

Can I separate my 1066 between the range transmission and the speed transmission? I need to replace whatever it is that holds the reverse drive cog in place on the shaft. Mine slides foward when I shift to reverse. The I&T book makes me think that I'll have to disassemble the entire back-end of the tractor before I separate the two transmissions. Any suggestions?
