Mitch--I'll e-mail a picture of the 986 version of the speed transmission separated from the rear end. We took the tractor apart at the clutch housing first then pulled the s.t. off with the hoist. Don't see why you would have to dismantle rear end first, as we saw that in the manual also and couldn't see why. If I remember right there is a half moon key on the reverse shaft and I believe you can see that with the side plate pulled off the rear end housing. I would say check that first before you get further into things. My memory isn't too good as we did this in Dec. and it's already March... RPM can you help?
