Thanks for the reply. The second scenario is the one that I'm facing...the cam lobe never gets under the rub block. So you agree that the timing is out by that much. The tractor has been in the family since it was new, but I don't think my father in law will know if the engine ever had major work...the kind that would have involved front end removal and governor drive gear work. That kind of inspection and repair are something I can't tackle right away. I'm a weekend warrior at this time, and the tractor is 400 miles from my weekday location, so I was looking at a quick fix approach for the time being. Your suggestions are very detailed, which I appreciate, and will try to find some time later to get that involved.

When I first inherited this tractor early this summer, it had been in the woods for 4-5 years, and it surprised me that it even started after we charged that battery and cranked her over. The only history I have on it is since my father in law took ownership. There's at least 20 years of prior history that I have no knowledge of. Oh well, that's what makes it kinda fun. I have 13 acres to brush hog and will use it as a work tractor if I can get it running well consistently. I've had it running well enough to cut 4 of the 13 acres, then it got to running so badly I started looking closer at both ignition and fuel sides. Haven't looked at the engine internals yet, though, because when it ran it sounded so sweet I couldn't imagine there being anything majorly wrong.
