John - Presuming you have distributor ignition (not a magneto) the motor will indeed quit once the battery runs down, just as you observed. Normal ammeter readings vary depending on engine speed and the battery's state of charge. At full RPM it will read about +12 to +15 amps with the battery is low and taper to about +5 once the battery becomes fully charged. At idle it however will read -2 to -4 amps regardless of the battery's charge level. If you are seeing an intermittent charge on the ammeter with the motor running at full speed, problem could be a loose generator belt, poor ground at the voltage regulator or a problem in the generator itself. Suggest checking/tightening the belt then making sure the regulator is base is solidly grounded (mounted to bare metal and mounting screws are tight). If that doesn't correct the problem, use a jumper wire to temporarily ground the "F" terminal at the voltage regulator with the motor running at full RPM. If the problem persists with the "F" terminal grounded the generator needs repair. Good luck!
