smokin (h) ! burnin some oil

loose valve guides allowing oil to go down the valve stem and burn the oil, or bad rings ? Does anyone know a good way to determine where the oil is getting into the combustion chamber. I dont really want to re-ring the pistons if the valve guides are the problem. I considered doing a compression test but I dont think that would indicate the condition of the oil control ring.
