The carbuerators are not the same, as to jetting. The M carb main jet is adjusted until it "runs smooth", the SM main jet is adjusted 5 turns out for max power, and can be turned in for better fuel economy. In other words I consider it to be an adjustable fixed jet. It is likely that the M carb on an SM is too lean, you might try opening the main jet.
