You got lucky, try a new '77 Nova 250 that had leaky head gasket, valve cover gasket, squeaky water pump, bad choke thermostat, bad carburetor, broken coil cover (the factory put black electrical tape over it to cover the hole up),an oil pressure light that would come on when descending a hill, among other problems, and this car was traded with 31,000 miles on it.31,000 miles! It sat for 3 months before some sucker bought it. (The car also had a broken leaf spring, rusted thru rear shocks, cloudy paint job, numerous exhaust systems, poor spacing of welds at the rear wheellip that lead to premature rust in the seam,a rear brake problem that would develop heavy brake dust that needed to be cleared monthly or the wheel would lock up when wet,a rear defroster that would continually blow fuses...etc). The 70s was the worst for quality control, and no American car was immune. Personally,I'm not a straight 6 fan but I think the Ford 300-6 was one of the best. The slant 6 wasnt bad,but way underpowered.
