Carl: Are you absolutely sure there are no hydraulics. I have some questions. Are there levers on side of hood, just to the right of the dash? These would be about 7" long with a round knob slightly smaller than a golf ball. There may be 1, 2 or 3 of those levers. Are there two steel tubes, one about3/4" the other about 1' running parallel to each other from under dash along the right side to a pump mounted between distributor and timing gear case? These would be visable just below hood to back of engine then they dip to level of frame rails along engine. If indeed you have those items you do have hydraulics. It's very rare to find a Farmall 400 with no hydraulics, not unheard of though.
