ANSWER: Yes something like that butttttttt more precise n calibrated. It regulates the current throught the gennys Field windings by the addition or removal of resistance between the FLD post and ground (via the VR) akin to how the old fashioned Low/High charge light switch did by dead grounding the Field for max charge or adding the resistance in series between FLD and ground for Low charge. HOWEVER it also more finely regulates it by the opening n closing (something like duty cycle) the field control relay contacts between the ground and the resistance...
If the charging system n genny n light system are all okay it shouldnt go to dischaerge with lights on unless its running slowwwwww and/or theres a VR or some other problem. Run my Troubleshooting Procedure as needed to see what the problem is.
