is the sound truly a knock, or is it closer to a loud tick? If the sound is closer to a tick, check the valve lash.
Also, did you check the connecting rods while you had the pan off? quickest way to check the connecting rods with the pan off is to turn the crank back and forth just a bit with your hand on each rod at the cap. if you feel slop when you "rock" the crank, you have a bad rod bearing. BTW, there is a difference between "slop" and "clearance". You could also check the mains, but that is best done by dropping the caps. You'll need a torque wrench to put them back on.
If those are all good, you might have a bad wrist pin in one of the pistons.
