Just the battery alone (no genny wired in) at Pos or Neg ground will power the ignition until it runs down (If its a mag it dont use the battery). If its a coil distributor ignition it performs best if the coil polarity matches the battery however.
NOTE BEFORE you re start the tractor with a genny connected, POLARIZE the genny so it matches the tractor polarity.
Most 6 volt came originally POS ground but a genny can charge at either polarity once polarized and if it has an ammeter its leads need swapped if you change polarity and likewise the coil as noted above
