I embarrassed an auctioneer a couple years back. Thought I had noticed a few "phantom" bids on the items. Came to a balanced head IH mower that I had called about and he knew I was interested. He backed the bidding all the way up to $50.00 when I finally waved my hand. went up real quick to $150 (still well below market) when I stopped - my wife even gave me a poke, she knew I planned on going up to $300 on it. The auctioneer about choked and pointed at a guy in the crowd and said "SOLD". The man backed up saying he wasn't bidding. The auctioneer turned back to me saying it was his mistake and asked if I would take it for my last bid, I told him I'd take it on my first bid. He wouldn't do it and restarted the bidding. Took it home for $50.00. I know they are out to get the best price for their seller, but they look awfully bad if they're too lazy to even use a shill in the crowd.
