What gives you the idea the P.S.'s were not as "bullet proof and rugged" as a synchro tranny? For heavy tillage, every day, with little shifting, the sychro might have a slight durability advantage, as well as saving a little fuel. For most other uses, especially loader work, I think the P.S. would win the "durability challenge" hands down.
