The black stain on light colored is a fungus or moss,Usually on the north side only.Notice that the shingles will be clean below lead flashed chimneys and antenna mounts.Light colored shingle wont get as hot as black in summer.A strip of zinc or bare copper wire run along the ridge will keep the fungus from forming.There are sprays that will kill moss on shingles.A coat of aluminum paint will make shingles last longer.I had 5 gallons of aluminum roof coating that I put on the barn stable roof.The shingles that were coated looked much better when we put on new shingles.Put a white shingle and a black shingle in the sun for a while.Touch each one after a few hours in the sun.Most people are going to metal roofing here because new shingles are not lasting.
