Hello Everyone,

Today I went to look at a JD 440 crawler and before I take the leap to purchase it I wondered if some one could answer a few questions as the owner knows very little about the machine.

There is only an adjustment mechanism on one side for track adjustment, is this correct?

Does the shorter the threads extend on the adjuster indicate less or more adjustment still available? The threads now extend about 4 inches.

Also the track pads are 2 bolt not 4, is this the original type of pads for this crawler?

There is a cover of some sort on the transmission that looks like an eyebrow window, is this some type of vent? It seems as though water etc. could run right into the transmission.

Probably have a couple hundred more questions but thanks for any help offered.

DC

i have a jd440. it is kinda light on the front end. and tree pushing capacity is limited to 6" diam trees pretty much. you can forget about stumps unless you dig around them. might ought to look for a 450 there are a lot more for parts and many sold at farm auctions at least down here in texas. My 440 diesel makes a knockingsound when first starter but rsolves a enine warms up. did one you looked at do the same???

The machine was already warmed up when I arrived to look at it, but am going back to see how it starts cold. This one has a front end loader and a hoe, just want to use it to move some dirt and put in a fence line.

DC - be sure to be there for a cold start. A warmed-up-when-you-arrive can be a bad sign, hope not, but check it out.

What kinda $$$ they asking for unit with blade and hoe? I've got same unit but gotta admit that with a 2 cyl detroit in it its under powered. Be warry of knocks when cold or starting, could be sign of bad news to come!

Have the same unit and while its underpowered, it does a lot in low gear, loader unit on mine is really heavy duty.
Since its only a five ton unit its hard to expect that big trees can be pushed over.
How much is it costing you? Is it yellow or green?
