I have an Oliver Cletrac HG68. It has a dozer hooked on a hydralic pump on the front of the crawler. When I started fixing up the crawler there was army olive drab paint under the industrial yellow. I seem to remember the army dropping crawlers of this type out of gliders. I vaguely remember seeing pictures of crawlers resembling cletracs clearing runways and pulling planes around bases. Also when I was ready to start the crawler last week I saw that the crank case was cracked and had been fixed. This makes me wonder if it was dropped and broken. I would like to know if this was an army crawler or if the olive drab was faded green and painted yellow or if olive drab was a primer. If you have any pictures of crawlers doing this type of work please tell me. Thank you in advance for helping me and giving me any ideas.

Both Darrell Smoker & John P have good information.
I doubt that your HG-68 was military, at least not in the 68" width, (it would have been too wide to fit through the doors of aircraft) now it could have been swapped out to 68"wide gauge later in its career.

Neither Cletrac HG's nor Clark Air CA-1's were dropped from aircraft or gliders by parachute. Good story but didn't happen. Some of those gliders did land hard,(they hoped for a controlled crash) and the oft told story of the gliders carrying a crew of three with the Clark Air Dozer. Pilot, Co-Pilot & the Dozer opperator who rode in the back. The dozer opperator's first duty was to bury the Pilot & Co-pilot.

Hey Bob,
I may be the fellow that D Smoker is refering to. We exhibit our HG42 at some East coast shows including Kinzers, Pa.
My crawler was purchased new in 1943 by the Army and later sold as military surplus, painted Cletrac orange, and went into farm service. By the time we acquired it, it was several other colors.
During restoration it was learned that all Cletracs of that vintage had a chartreuse colored primer by the factory. First coat of paint over that on mine was indeed a flat olive drab. I wound up mixing paint from chips and painting it with glossy enamel olive drab.
Hope this helps you in some way. If I can be of any more assistance give me an email. John.

The Army during WWII developed a crawler called the Clarkair CA-1 made by Clark the forklift people. It was an air transportable dozer. There are still a fair number around.

As for the Cletrac, the Army did buy them during WWII to move artillery around. There is a fellow who brings one to a show near me on regular basis. He has it restored in olive drab. If you have any questions the Army Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Ground in MD may be able to help you. He told me he got the info about it from them. They have a website if you want to get in contact with them. There was also a rubber tracked high speed crawler made by Cletrac for the Army called the M-1. You need to be specific because people confuse the two.
