HD-7W HIGH RPM PROBLEM

I have an HD-7W crawler that generally runs good, but when I get it on an incline over about 10 degrees it occasionally goes to an extremely high rpm and I can't shut it down with the fuel cutoff. The fuel cutoff seems like it's jammed. After about a minute or so it returns to regular rpm. Any ideas?

That is a detroit engine in that one. On a detroit if the engine will not shut off with the fuel being turned off and you are sure that the fuel cutoff in the govenor control housing is working properly and you let it run long enough to drain the filters etc, than you have what is called a run away in Detroit terms. They were know for that. What happens is you are pumping engine oil throught the blower or into the air box so that even if you shut the fuel off it will continue to run. The only way to kill it off is to cut the air off. That is why on the HD9 and other they had the air cut off just above the blower housing. Now it could be that yours is missing. I would check for that.

Since you seem to have the problem going down hill, more likely than not your govenor control has gone bad. It is spring loade device that is at the front of the engine where you throttle control is attached. On the engive they used what is called variable control govenor machine. You can get any Detroit dealer to get parts or even have them work on it for you and get it tuned up.

Detroit were notorious for slobbering. Make sure that the airbox vents are open and clear. The engine will suck in that stuff and can keep runing.

Thanks
