Suspect my clutches are greasy. What can I safely clean them with without removing them. Also, if I do take them out where can I find the special tool required to remove the outer pinion?

Lee- The clutches were oil soaked.Tried cleaning with spray on degreaser no luck. Tried adjusting as per manual - no luck. Never really worked like it should. Brake bands look ok. Do the clutches ever wear out?

The clutches do wear out. What happens is as the clutches wear you have to move the through-out bearing back to maintain correct free travel. Finally you run out of adjustment and the clutches have to be replaced or a plate added. Are your clutches slipping? Usually clutch problems don't show up turns but when under load in a straight line, one track will lose power and the tractor will turn in that direction. If the tractor won't turn, either the clucth is stuck and not releasing power to that track or the brake is not working and the turn is very slow.

Go to www.ibozing.com in the resources section, there is a tip concerning the use of mineral spirits to clean off clutches etc. That should take care of the washing of the clutchs. Sorry missed on the engine its is a 371 detroit.

While I cannot precisely tell you the answer to that question on having to remove the pinoin shaft. To check if you do not have to remove the shaft, you will have to remove the top cover to the steering clutchs. Look inside and if you see two rows of bolts one on one side and the the other on the other side and on each side there looks like there is a large plate throught which the bolts attach than no you should be able to live the assembly out of there with the brake bands being the sling. If you look at the HD9 lit at www.ibdozing.com you will see the construction of the HD9 that is in the resources section. They did share some common parts, the rails being one of them. \

With the steering I would presume that you have the bands properly adjusted and that the bands are not fully worn out.

What do you mean?? The truck frame on the 7W was shorter than the HD9 and had only 5 rollers, on the info that I have had the pitch, and height of the rail were the same. They did have fewer links in the chain but you could take two HD7w chains and with two master pins make one fit an HD9 or HD11 below serial #1003 and the HD9 Could use the same chain. I am confused here. The 9G and the 9F ad longer trucks by one roller.

I do know that the HD7 did have the monolithic frame design like my IH TD9's do and the the HD9 had the unitized frame. The 9 and above with the unitized frame is a snap to work on. One problem with the IH is to get one thing apart you have to take the whole thing apart.

The HD-9 is the next generation design and advertised its module design ie the frictions can be replaced without removing anything else. The HD-7,10,14 are a carry over from Monarch. The output shaft from the rearend goes through the friction housing/carrier. To remove the friction H/C, remove the drive pinion on the OPPOSITE side and slide the rearend output shaft that direction far enough to clear the friction H/C and unbolt from the pinion flange and lift out. To reinstall reverse above ;-).

I can FAX you the pages from the manual if that would help.

re: Engine over speed. I wonder if your air box drains are plugged and on an incline the oil/diesel runs back into the liner air intakes.
