I am considering purchasing a early model Cat D4 to do a bit of land clearing, stumps, driveway, etc.

I found a Cat D4 that appears to be in excellent condition. Rebuilt pony motor, rebuilt cylinders, new seals in the hydraulic pump, new paint, new seat, track is tight and well maintained, sprockets are in good to excellent condition, undercarriage in general is in good to excellent condition, 4 cyl diesel runs great. Main clutch, steering clutches, and breaks seem to work fine. Only downside is the triangular linkage from the blade to the cylinders had been broken at one time and welded up. (looks like a common problem?)

Serial No. 7B21971SB (or 7U21971SB). Does anyone have an idea what year this might be.

What would be a fair price to offer for this machine. The guy is asking $5000.00 which sounds like a steal given the condition of the machine.

Thak You

Todd S.

Todd- If this is as good as it sounds jump on it. The older D4 were hard to find. The undercarriage was OK, but not what they are today. PS, email for more info on this..Andy

Is the main clutch dry or a oil clutch?

1953, sounds like a fair price. Of course, time will tell. If you know of a cat mechanic, let him check it out.
