JD 350B dozer hydraulic problem

I have a hydraulic problem with my JD 350B dozer. When it is cold it has a tough time getting the hydraulics to work properly (6 way blade)- but after about 30 minutes - they work just fine. The dozer has a flow divider and diversion valve on it, and I have cleaned both of the reliefs on these valves. The main relief is much harder to get to (requires control valve removal). It seems as though the problem started when I started using the diversion valve for the rear mounted backhoe. If it is a pump problem - wouldn't it get worse after the oil got hot (as opposed to better)?

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!

Many Thanks,

Bill

The saga goes on. Ran the rascal the other day, and did notice that when you first start it, and it is sitting there idleing - the blade raises fine. But when you increase the RPM's then the problem starts. Appears that it's pump (speed) related - bad seals???

Have you checked inside the reservoir for a filter and or suction screed. Clean the suction screen and see if that helps.

...does the problem go away by itself??? could be a suction leak or restriction before the pump...when it does work , does the pump put a strain on the engine when a cylinder is bottomed ??Does the blade lift the machine without a problem?? Does the backhoe work immediately when attached??...

Jonathan,
Yes it goes away by itself. I've tried to do all the troubleshooting items in the service manual. Can't find any suction leak. The filter is a return line filter - which has been changed. When it does work - the engine loads up when the cylinder is bottomed out (relief dumping). And when it does work right the machine lifts the blade correctly, and in 3 seconds (per specs.). When you first start it (cold) the hose from the pump (pressure side) jumps around like it is cavitating. Doesn't hardly have enough power to lift the blade - takes a long time, and doesn't load the engine when it bottoms out (not enough pressure?). Sounds like air in the line, but I don't see and leaking when it is just sitting. There is one short piece of rubber hose in the suction line (between the tank and the steel line running to the pump). Also I have seen on occasion air bubbles in the site glass for the hyd. tank. I thought if it was a bad pump - it wouldn't "heal itself". Haven't put the backhoe on it for awhile (because of this problem). Also I use JD 303 oil (hyd, trans, and reverser). Been thinking about changing that short rubber hose - pump is about $450. (I'm just a poor ole country boy)

Again - many thanks

Bill

Sounds like wrong oil. To heavey when cold.

Ran it again the other day - same story. Wouldn't hardly lift the blade - seen some foaming in the hyd. tank level window. Thought I was using JD hydraulic oil - but will pick up a bucket - just in case. As before, after 15 or 20 minutes works Great.

Thanks for your input on this problem!

Bill

no bull I'm a service tech for a local JD dealer sounds like your valve is hanging up till it gets warm, with the foaming in the tank is caused by your valve going into bypass sending fluid back to tank
