Does anyone know of a websight where I can find info on how to replace the stearing breaks on my hd5

www.ibdozing.com has a lot of crawler info and equipment relavent to that era. There are HD5s there and many of the individuals with pictures do have HD5's Chappy is one of them.

As to removing the steering clutchs, it is very simple. One of simpleist around. Beats old IH and Cat machines by a mile.

I can get you the manul if needed and that is strongly urged. You should have the parts manual also so that you can get the right parts.

1) Make sure tractor cannot roll or move.
2) Remove Seat,
3) Remove Fuel Tank 4) Remove steering compartment cover
5) Remove brake rod at the pin, they are spring loaded on the out side of that so you may want to release the springs first and hopefully not tear your boot.
6) On both sides of the steering clutch there are bolts with a keeper wire. Remove wire. Remove bolts. Now you will have to turn it a bit to get all of them out. The brake band is the sling that will lift it out. You will want is supported by an overhead lift. 7) With the use of an appropriate hydraulic press you can remove the bolts holding it together otherwise there will be some very dangerous flying objects if you do not.
8) Get the parts manual and Service Manual for the machine

Thought JB was asking about brake removal? Just as Bill listed expect don't unbolt the friction/clutch assembly. The brake bands have a pin in the middle of the band so once the anchor and operating linkage is disconnected you should be able to snake the band around the f/c assembly and out the top. If you can't snake it out in one piece. There is a pipe plug in the housing you can remove to remove the middle pin of the brake band and remove it in two pieces. You can install the new band the same way.

Was that a duh on my part or what. What ever reason I was thinking steering clutch removal that is such an often asked question.

Yep there is a pin and one the end of the pin are threads. I do not offhand recollect. They come out real nice too. Easy to fix once you get them out. Drill out the brass rivets and rivet the new ones back in. Reinstall and readjust the brake pedal to the proper settings.

You may want to make sure that the control rod yolk is free on each one. You will have to adjust them you will be very unhappy because you might have to take it apart again to get the rods out and get them loose to get the proper brake settings.

Been there and done that.

Improper brake settings can really affect the operations of a crawler. The manual will be invaluable to make sure that everything went ok.

Years ago, Allis Chalmers was still in business, we put in new brakes HD-6. Brakes fresh from the dealer. Brakes for a newer HD-6... with power steering!!! You and a helper couldn't push on that pedal hard enough to turn that dozer.

Sounds like those were great brakes. Manual would never help there. Must have had something odd.

A Big Thanks to every body, sorry it took me so long to get back, been swamped with work. Any how it is the bands and drums both I need to replace. Got this thing out of an old farmers row, where she had become part of the ground and briars, trees etc. She was rusted solid, took me several months just to free the tracks, then the motor and trans. redid the starter and got her to fire, felt pretty good about then. sanded the cylinders to a nice shine, replaced all the hoses, new fluid, and she works like a charm. Make one right turn, it was her last, and left wasn't happening at all. I always enjoy taking the worst and making them work again. Thanks again, and if you think a manual would help, I could be interested, I was just told they weren't too helpful on the HD5 so I hadn't gotten one this time.
