I just bought a John Deere 1964 440 2cyl GM deisel dozer and I have been trying to get it in shape to do some work.It was sitting for about a year before I bought it. I'm having trouble figuring out what is wrong.
When I put it in gear ,it goes a few feet and cuts out then I have trouble starting it again. Does this sound like a fuel problem?
I'm not familiar with maintenance on this engine and don't have owners manual. Any one know how to bleed the fuel system? I think it may have air in the fuel lines.

I have a 440 also and it runs awesome. Bleeding the fuel is simple. On the right side is the fuel filter. on the bottom is a valve to drain the filter can. Start there and drain all the old junk out. Then on top of the filter is a large nut with a screw in the middle. Take the screw out and wait a minute or so for fuel to be clear and no bubbles, put the screw back in and start the motor. One thing I have found is on the tank is a shutoff valve and have seen it get plugged up so take the hose off at the shutoff valve and be sure your getting a real nice flow of fuel to the filter. Hope this helps. any questions feel free to e-mail me I've had mine for 15 yrs and its a great work horse Dave

Check your air supply, also. The 2-53 wants a good supply, or it may hog down under a load. Mud daubers, maybe?

Good advice on replacing and bleeding the filters.

On bleeding Detroit/GM Diesels if they run you don't need to bleed them. They do not have a high pressure pump with lines to each injector. The low pressure pump, mounted on the blower, supplies fuel to a fuel manifold on the head, the manifold supplies each injector via a supply pipe under the valve cover, the fuel flows through the injector body and out another pipe to the return fuel manifold and back to the fuel tank. The injectors inject fuel when the camshaft operates a rocker arm, pushing on the injector pump shaft. The injector itself is the high pressure pump. If you run a Detroit/GM out of fuel, you will have to prime it but if it will start you're fine. To prime them you have to remove the valve cover and loosen each supply pipe and crank the engine until clear fuel (no bubbles) runs out of the fitting. Don't run out of fuel, this is not a fun job.

I would check the fuel outlet on the tank. Sounds like the outlet or the tank shut-off valve is plugged.

Good Luck,
Lee

Hello- Glad to hear you got a dozer, I am not familiar with this model, but diesels all have certain things in common. Make sure you service the fuel filters by cleaning screens, and replacing and pre priming the disposable filters. IF the unit has a hand primer pump, use it to boost your pressure prior to starting. Check the snug fit of all lines prior to startup, start the engine and crack each line loose at the injector. Make sure to slowly bleed each line at a time to ensure they dont trap air...hope this helps..Andy
