I have a cat 312b excavator and we need to cut the tracks so that it is 8'6" so we can move it w/o an wideload permit. The dealer suggested that we cut the tracks down with a plasma cutter. I was curious if anyone had any experience with this practice and if so can you tell me about them. Any feedback is appreciated.

Do you know how unstable the 312 is going to be?
What size shoes do you have on the 312? Cutting the width down could be a mistake. The smaller the shoe the large impression you make. Most times a machine that small is usually used to get in and out of tight places w/out a huge mess of a big machine. I don't know what you use your machine for but cutting down the width of the pad could be a big mistake. If you get into soft spotts a lot I would not cut the width down.
I have a 322 and before I bought it Cat tried to sell me a narrow gage 320bl. Any time you had to get into a soft spot you would end up pulling yourself through it. Just something to consider

Right now the pads on her are 28", bringing me to 8'10" i was planning to cut them down to be 24" pads bringing me to the legal width of 8'6". I know that the 24" pads are a pretty popular size on this machine and they even come as small as 20". I feel this alternative is cheaper than the $500 a year for an overwide permit and well cheaper than the $5000 overwide ticket.

Plasma is limited in depth and speed. Within spec its great, leaves a very clean surface. Check your area for a good steel shop with a good unit.

Have you check with your states laws. 8 ft 6 inches is the max width without a permit. 8 ft was, then it was increased 6 inches.

Ask Andy in the Maintenance section of the discussion board at www.ibdozing.com. He has done heavy equip maintenance for 20+ years in the mining industry.

Ibdozing has a new and expanded discussion forum for asking and posting questions which should make it easier to find what you want
