Anyone have any suppliers for new drive chain for a John Deere 40 Crawler? I priced them through Deere and just about fainted. I have a four roller and also need a front guide wheel. I would also appreciate any tips anyone has. You can see my progress at the link provided after Thanksgi

Try a berco or ITM u.c. if you want new, you can get a used one with some pretty decent life to them from a used parts supplier in your area. The U.C. feom a 455 will work also i know. We picked up a new 455e in 1985 and our undercarriage went on the 450c about a year later so i put the new u.c. on the 455 and put the one from the 455 on the 450. The idlers rollers, chains and pads are interchangable. both the 455 and the 450 run fine. to this dayand that was 14 years ago, we just put a new uc on the 455 last year and the u.c. on the 450 hasnt seen more than 2000 hours of use and it is still fine. That is my 2 cents. If you have any questions or would like to know of a supplier in your area feel free to email me and ill see if i can help you out.- Rich

I AM SO SORRY, i could have sworn that you were asking for help on a 450 in stead of a 40. Ignore most of what i said. But see if you can get a u.c. from berco if you do not feel you are capable of turning yourself a new one.

Hank,
I have plenty of front idlers in good condition. If your's is a four roller, you will need to measure the front idler, it could be a std. or oversize. As far as track chains, there is no other supply than Deere, unless you want to convert to 350 chain, and that is spendy. If your rails are good shape,I can re-bush them for you and you are good for a long time. If they are not worth rebuilding, I have some chains for sale as well.

Hank,

As for repairing the front idlers the center guide on each of my idlers had worn to a knife edge. I chucked the idler in my lathe and turned them straight and flat across the face. Next I rolled a strip of 3/16" 304 stainless steel to the 17" out side diameter of the idler. I made a keeper out of 1/4" stainless and after fitting the 4" stainless band TIG welded the keepers on each side to stop the flat stock from walking off of the idler. The inner guide was rolled from (2) 1/2" x 1/2" square 304 stainless steel as well. The two pieces were positioned on the idler and stick welded on both sides. I sand blasted all the welds then fused the welds with the TIG welder to make the weld lay just a little flatter. Material cost per idler was about $175.00 CND per idler. Plus my time of course. The idlers look like new with the new wear surface of stainless steel.

Hope this helps.

TonyK.
