HD11 Engine switch

...Well, I've been trying to figure out what the small oil tank was on my HD11E (see previous posts), but it doesn't really matter anymore. #5 decided it would rather be external than internal, so now my HD11E is a big yellow yard ornament....

...Okay, 671 Detroits are a dime a dozen, and I've heard that they're pretty much interchangable. My new question; How interchangable is "pretty" interchangable? Do they have enough torque for the HD11?

.....Such is life.... Ho hum....

Any replies would be appriciated. (I'm married to 'er now, so I guess it's time for a new/different engine).

Hey, thanks for the replies. First of all, Andy, I'll let everybody know what the oil tank was as this project progresses. I said in earlier posts that I believe it went towards the rear ends, but I'll track her down for sure.

Bill, you seem like a wealth of information. Thanks a million already for the up coming questions. As luck would have it, my dad has a 8V71 fresh out of his Greyhound bus project. (He's putting a big cam 400 Cummins into the MC10 he just bought....talk about a project. The Cummins is around 8" longer....at 63 he's still going strong...)

I know that the 8V71's weren't strokers like the 671's. Would I still get the torque I need with the 8V? And how about the bolt up of flywheel housings. Did the AC have the same bolt pattern as the Detroit? I'm not too concerned about fitting it in there, as long as legnth isn't the problem, but I am concerned with bolting up the flywheel housing, flywheel, and that area. ANYTHING is possiable with a little welding, a little torching, a little fabricating, and a LOT of patience. (and hopfully not too much money).

Anyway, I'm going to my fathers in a few minutes to check out the 8V71 and tell him the bad news. I've got to get some weights for the rear of the Case tractor I hope to use to pull the AC engine. Any Idea on the weight of the AC engine?
Also, any info on the bolt up on the Flywheel area of the Detroit would be appriciated.

..Thanks again in advance

Sorry to hear that piston #5 took off.

The HD11E had a 130HP on the direct drive at 1800 rpm. The 671 at 1800 had 114 hp the way that AC set them up with the older two valve style heads.

I do not know your serial number, if it is earlier than 1000K than the correct fitting engine would be the Detroit 471 which with the 4N head and tuned up to 2400 rpm should net you around 125+ horse with the 75mm injectors. You can go to biger injectors and tune it down and get some more horse like the 95mm or bigger.

I do not think there is enough room to fit the 671 motor in place, not unless you want to rework the drive train and shorten up the drive shaft and move the engine closer to the fire wall and the cut down the shaft for the hydraulic pump.

Depending upon what serial number of HD11 that you have, the Detroit will require some modifications to the rear housing to fit the bolt pattern and the fly wheel. If the 671 or 471 is a power unit you will have to change to a scanver type pump and the proper oil pan. It is do able

If you have above 1000K for serial number, we can still go 471, I have to get you the housing, and inner parts to do that. I have most of that a round to do that.

8V71 would fit lenhth wise but width might be a problem. Would be very good for power.

Give me a holler if you need anything.

Thanks

wk

Sorry to hear of the piston Kevin. Once you get it out you can check out the mystery tank- feed line and let us know what it was.
