D2 Cat Cylinder Sleeve Question

Anyone out there that has experience with the o-ring type seals that go between the cylinder sleeves and block on an old D2 Cat. We are in the process of restoring a 5U model with the 4" bore size. The pistons were previously ceased in the sleeves due to rust and we've removed them (both the pistons and sleeves came out together).

In the process of re-assembling the sleeves back into the block and the sleeves have square grooves at the base. The replacement parts provided by a Cat dealer are o-rings that don't appear to belong in the square grooves. When asked, their explanation is that the o-ring seal will flatten out to conform the square groove which doesn't make sense to me.

Our problem is an obvious one, the o-ring seals will simply roll out the of groove when we start to re-install the sleeves.

Each cylinder sleeve also had a thin brass sleeve around the seal grooves. No dealer can find a replacement part for those and we are told by a machinist that these may be shim stock left in at the assembly plant. We are wondering if these brass sleeves are like a ring compressor for piston ring installation all though there is no way to tighten them to the outside of the sleeve around the seals prior to installation.

Any suggestions ? Thanks.

Wet sleeves are sealed at the bottom with the o-rings and at the top with the head gasket. A lot of times the service manual will give the required standout of the sleeve from the top of the block. Normally only several thousands. If standout is insufficient head gasket may leak coolant into the cylinder. The fix is to place shims under the sleeves to get the required standout. This should be checked prior to putting on o-rings. Could this be what the shims were for?

Hi Rod- I have no experience w/ your machine, but I know Cat makes a lot of grooves square. I work on a lot of modern Cat stuff, including changing orings on hoses and pumps etc. All the oring grooves are made square. We have a number of sliding installations that require close attention to avoid cutting the seal. We use lubriplate grease on the bore and 5 wt oil on the top edge of the oring. The idea is to leave the bottom edge dry to keep it from squirting out of the groove. Talk to your local Cat service people and see what they can suggest.sa

Thanks for the response. Do you have any idea what the thin sleeves are for. It turns out their made out of copper not brass. Their about 2" tall .

Do you think we can leave them out at re-assembly ?

Your original idea sounds right to me, someone must have been using them for a compression sleeve. Might be a good idea to post question at www.acmoc.com
that is- antiquecatmachineownerclub.....plenty of old Cat expertise there
also try www.ibdozing.com
look for the cat board,
