I have a TD-15/150 machine which I've completely redone. Both heads were of course cracked. To avoid the same thing happening again, I'm very careful to let it cool down well before shutting down. I also understand that I've got to be careful during start-up as well. What precautions do I need to take during the start-up period to avoid cracking the heads? Thanks!

Cracked heads on these IH gas diesels has been a "why" subject since I started driving them in the early 1950's. The MD and WD6 series as well as the Supers were O.K. but from the 9's and up problems occured. From my experience low water levels, extra hard pulling and a steep slope up or down caused a problem. Some operators installed an expansion tank right behind the radiator and after that no more cracked heads. The most common expansion tank I have seen is the same as the gas tank that the big engine used. Mounted properly with a hole cut in the hood for filling the alteration looked good. I purchased a SWD9 at a sale a few years back that had a very good installation.

Kurt, my father inlaw had a td-15 for years, he stated that running them longer than one minute on gas would cause the heads to crack. reason being, that in the gas mode, there is a small valve for each cyl. that is open, this drops the compression so you can start it on gas, he said that with those valves open, that hot exhaust gas goes out, and cool air comes in, and if run long enough, caused the head to crack. When starting his first time of the day, would fire it on gas, check the oil pressure, lite a ciggeret, change it over to diesel. If he killed it, or started it after it was warmed up, he switched it over to diesel just as soon as it was restarted, never had a problem doing it like that.

What about shutting down, did he follow the manual instructions to switch back over to gas for a time?

Yes, after you have let it cooled down for a while on dsl, switch it over and let it run on gas for a moment and shut it off by turning your key off. Then once its shut off, move the compression release lever to the DSL running position to allow the valves to cool.
