I,ve been thinking about getting an old dozer to fix up and use. Just beginning to learn whats out there, and have more than a few questions. For a machine like a John Deere 350 or 1010 what can you expect to pay for undercarriage/track parts, possibly used parts? (Ct., New York area) How large a machine is an Allis Chalmers HD6 compared to a John Deere 350? Allis parts availibility a problem? Any advice make, model or otherwise would be appreciated. Thanks. Geoff

The HD-6 is about twice the weight of the 350.

John Deere are good machines. Any of the older machines can have troubles finding parts. Recently I was aske to find steering handles for a 1010 JD. Found some but they were bad too. As for parts availability, the JD should be better. However since I have access to quite a large selection of AC parts for the HD5 and HD6 the parts availablity to me is very good.

Now the AC HD6 is a very good machine and is good to opperate. The engine is expensive to fix but depending upon the model you are getting and what you plan to do, the HD6 can be repowered to the Detroit 271 if it is the right model of HD6.

Parts can be harder to find for the HD6 but, for me I would take the HD6 over the JD, but that does not mean that if the right JD came along I would say no.

Check out www.ibdozing.com it has one of the larges and most active forums on the web for AC and IH crawlers, Terex, JD and Cat and other machines.

Thanks for your reply(s). Will probably go look at the HD6 after the holiday, though it is probably a big project as it supposedly has a bad crankshaft. Don't know much about the rest of the machine yet. Bill, if you have access to Allis parts where are you located? Geoff

Geoff,

I have a JD MC and an A/C HD 5, I also have cletrac's and olivers, cat's and have owned several others.

The HD6 is big, and if the engine is bad, I would stay clear of it. If this is your first machine I would recommend buying anything that is running and smaller! It is much easier to work on and figure out, then you can parlay that knowledge to a larger machine.

Hope this was helpful

Dave
