IH and the great starting fluid controversy

I don't understand some guys reluctance to use starting fluid in cold weather, especially with the IH gas/diesel motors. I use a good quality starting fluid with upper cylinder lubricant in fairly moderate quantities on my TD-15/150. I've had no trouble at all, and the engine gives no indication it's struggling. It's a huge help below 20 degrees F. Remember, the compression ratio is reduced with the starting valves open when starting on gas. Any increase in the violence of the combustion explosion (due to ether), resulting in higher cylinder pressures, would be moderated by the open starting valves. I would not think pressures on the cylinder heads would approach anything like what the engine sees when it runs on diesel. Unless someone is able to convince me otherwise, I will continue to follow the advise of the old IH skinner - "I squirt, therefore I run"!

Why not use WD40? It works great when wanting to start on these cold days, and you do have the violent damage of starting fluid.

Yes Detroits are notorious for not wanting to start without ether. That will happen even at 60+ degrees.

In the article called oops, that was posted, I about did that on the 856 last fall. Was not thinking when got into the cab. Luckily I did not have it full throttle but there was one heck of a racket and then settled down.

You are right that the compression lever on the IH will reduce compression. I would say using ether with an upper cylinder lubricant will help out a lot. The concern with ether was that as the engine fires, ether is very hot and you get more full combustion and less gas out the stack. This would cause a rapid heating in the area of the exhaust valves and where the compression valve is and help to accelerate head cracking over time. Since gas burns cleaner than deisel, the lead in gas was designed to help cushion the valves. Todays gasoline has none if this plus now you have more fully burned gas with the rapid head.

Those are my thoughts on the subject. Have a good one. Be careful and safe this holiday.

I really thing with anything, prudent judicious use of starting fluids is ok.

I agree starting fluid is a necessary evil at times. It should never be sprayed before the motor is cranking to avoid sucking a dose into a couple of cylinders.

What would someone who is afraid to use either do if they had to start a detroit in the cold? Detroit diesels are notorious for not starting without either anytime the tempiture is under 50.

Here's a post you might find a little humor in or possibly relate to.
