My '63 TD-15B has had a problem. It is on a job right now and I need to get it fixed asap but since this is the weekend I am going to try and do it myself. Ever since I bought it 2 years ago, whenever I use it more than about 2 or 3 hours it gets weak in the gears and eventually won't even move. When you pull out the transmission fluid dipstick it is white and foamy looking. After sitting overnight the oil will look normal again and the machine will work fine for another 2 or 3 hours. I also notice that after it stops working you can shut it down and hear alot of gurgling in the hosing under the deckplate. I have changed the tranny oil several time in the past year and most recently was in November. Is this air or water and how should I go about locating and fixing this???

Thanks for any help

Keith

Generally white in oil means water. The way to check for this is let the machine sit for at least a day, crack the drain plug, and watch for water seeping around the plug. Does this machine have an oil cooler that could be leaking and letting water into the hyd. fluid? Was the oil discolored when you changed it? Air in the system sounds like a possibility. I'm not familiar with your machine, but some had a pickup screen on the suction inlet that could be clogged. Check/change all the filters. Look for any leaks in the system. If you have to use it, add something like Lucas Oil, 10%-20%, to the hyd. oil, or change to a synthetic oil. These will foam less, so you could work longer.

Well, I fount the suction side filter and removed it only to find the cannister half full of slimy stringy stuff and caked greasy dirt. The filter was so bad that I just stared at it for about 5 minutes in disbelief. I also found out that 2 of the four bolts holding the filter housing were stripped out and replaced thos and cleaned the filter. I haven't tried it yet but hope this helps.

Sounds like a powershift transmission and you are getting air in the system and the clutches are slipping due to lack of pressure. Do not run the machine that way or you will burn out the clutches fast!! Check for low oil level, or a pluged filter. May also be a broken or cracked pick up tube to the pump or a bad gasket on the pump itself.
