A friend came over the other day and pulled the motor on my 350. I am not able to do this for a neck injury, so he did it. When he eased the motor out, the tranny shaft came out with it! And could not be pulled out of the clutch till the pressure plate was loosened up. Is this normal? Also, looking at the back of the motor, there was a small hole at the top right side. Its not a bolt hole, it matches up with a hole in the clutch housing, but whats the purpose? I cant tell what its used for. It looks like its plugged kinda. Any help? Thanks!

The small hole is for a tachometer drive, this same engine is uses in ag tractors also.

Is it possible to install a tach? I think the loaders may have had the tach, but not on this dozer. But was wondering if one could do it?
Thanks

the shaft definitely should have stayed in the tranny. You will need a clutch alignment tool to put it back together. You can probably borrow this tool from your JD dealer, then return it by mail, if he is far away. They very seldom have these old machines to work on anymore, so aren't too particular about needing them immediatly.

The hole about 3/4" with NF thread? I think it was used for the thecmeter on early modles. The meter was mounted on the floor board.

Thanks for the replies! I think your right about the oil pressure. It does seem to be blocked, kinda, and the hole does go through the bell housing. It is not the dowel pins, I saw those. Kinda weird place for a oil pressure place to be. I would like to see somemore responses on the shaft coming out though. I did not see anything that would keep it in though. It does not have a reverser on it. So the shaft goes clear back to a coupler, according to the book. I am replacing the clutch and pressure plate, because after I would run it for over an hour, and try to shift from 1st to reverse, it would grind, like the clutch wouldnt stop the tranny. Sure enough, after seeing the clutch, I will be changing it. Plus the throwout bearing, and flywheel bearing.

Hey BZ, I cannot imagine how the shaft came out with the engine (not saying that it didn't or anything) but theres a housing inside the bellhousing with bolts in it that holds this shaft in, so in my mind this is not normal, and the shaft should slide right out of the clutch and the shaft should stay in there (in the bellhousing) look for a bent shaft if it wont slide out of the clutch, the hole your talking about I think is an oil pressure port and probably is plugged on your engine, for some reason not known by me JD would pick up engine oil pressure in the bellhousing and go off to the gauge.

Now that I think about it. If my buddy didnt have the motor level when he pulled it straight out, it may have put a un wanted pressure on the shaft going through the clutch, and then into the bushing! So maybe..thats why the shaft wouldnt come straight out, without loosening the pressure plate! What do you think? Maybe?

BZ that hole is probably a dowel pin hole used to aline the tranny and engine. There should have been a pin in the hole, check on the ground.
