I have a late 1960's D4 and would like to upgrade to a newer (1975-1980's)D3/D4. I'm most interested in the upgrade for the automatic transmission, 6-way blade, trailerble, possible peddle steer and general ease of use. I've been looking all over the Internet, trade magazines and auctions trying to educate myself in making the best decision.

Can anyone help or direct me in the right direction in what I need to look out for when considering a purchase? Life of engine and transmission? Undercarriage? Transmission? Tracks? Caterpillar web-site information/clubs.

Thank you in advance for any tidbit of information you would like to share with me.

We have a 79 D3. They are a good machine a little rough to ride but easy to operate and very reliable. (unlike the junk 450b jd we had)We upgraded to a 96 D5 last year and would like to sell the D3.

Thank you for the comment. I guessing that you mean "rough to ride" in that you bounce around alot. How would you compare the pushing power and productivity of your 79 D3 to my older late 60's heavy D4. If you would also like to send me some information about your D3 that would be great too. joel@bordergril.net

I take from your your frist post your d4 dosent have power shift. altho I have never run a old D4 I belive in straight ahead pushing the D4 will out push the D3. But after that my money would be on the speed and monuverabilty of the 3 with 6 way blade and power shift its production will way out do any simaler size machine with straigt blade and stop to shift. Over the years I have run the D3 many people were amazed at the amount of work it would get done. For a so called "small dozer". Yes the bouncing around is what I meant but I did run it to its ability. and its lite weight didn't help. It was very reliable. I will send you more info.
