need a crawler loader for a property i have to put a long road into through a fair sized hill, then dig for a basement. Prices and models are causing my eyes to go blurry... whats the model difference on 955's H - K - L, etc. and should it make a difference on price. the 977 was reasonably priced but looks awful big. Own a case 1818 skid steer for fun and this will be a whole new ball game but I'm ready. Advice anyone? Thanks.

Thanks Billy, thats a start. Found a nearby auction with 3 - 955's. I can compare them to each other but still need to figure out what to look for on the under carriage.

The 955 H is the oldest of the three and the 955 L is the newest. I think the H is from the early 60's, K from late 60's thru early 70's and L started in early to mid 70's and ran thru about 1980 when Cat started building the rear engine Loaders. The H had a sloped hood and had a lot of engine overheating problems. A lot of people like the K better than the L, both of which are better machines than the H. I think all of them had the Powershift (Automatic) transmission. The machines also got heavier everytime they changed series. The 977 is a lot heavier. I am pretty sure they made a H and K Series in the 977 also. If that is a 977 without a letter it is a fairly old machine. You probably would be better of with one of the 955 series. They will do most anything and can be hauled fairly easily and probably will be cheaper to repair. Make sure the transmission and the undercarriage are in good shape. These are high dollar repair items, as much or more than the diesel engine.
