I think I will be pulling the motor and reverser on my 350b. I went to john deere and the service advisor thinks my coupler is wasted. I'm gonna pull the motor asap. I would like to pull the motor and reverser as a unit as John Deere said to do. Is there any tricks I can use to make my life easier? Will I need to drain the Hydro for this? How heavy is this assembly? It's a diesel.
Thanks

Steve, when doing this job you should be able to remove hyd pump from front of eng and get it out of the way without draining hydro just be sure to remove all clamps holding the lines. If you need to work on the coupler you will need to separate the eng and bellhousing so it doesn't make sense to pull entire unit one piece. Remove the eng alone it should be no problem with a small shop eng crane. On your flywheel you will find the coupler attached with five springs. The coupler the springs and the spring anchors will need to be replaced also possibly the fiber disc behind the coupler. As for the reverser the input shaft will probably need to be replaced. JD calls this the input spider and if I remember back to the last one I did it's about $650. There is quite a bit of related hardware that may also need replacing including clutch discs as thier splines get beat up too. The last one I did was for the original owner with 4200 hrs. and only noisy out the door cost parts and labor was around $6500. Do some research though many of the parts are availible after market and it will save you a whole lot of money. Feel free to email me me with any questions. I do this kind of work for a living and also have the JD manuals. Which if you checked into it are very expensive themselves. Good Luck Chuck Hilton Hilti1114@aol.com

Steve, I pulled my motor with a friends help. And I have a regular engine puller stand (hoist). It was pretty easy, but I dont think I would try and tackle the clutch housing with the motor combined. You will have your hands full! I guess if you were going to do it, I would use the engine puller hoist, with a good rolling jack under the clutch housing. And ease it all out. I guess it would work. I have a regular clutch on my 350, so when I pulled the motor, I just unbolted the pump off the front, and moved it out of the way. So I didnt drain any hyd. fluid, but then again you have a reverser. So I am sure the other guys knows best. Keep us posted as to what you find!
Good Luck.

Hey Steve, its a pain to pull engine and reverser together if it was only the coupler stripped I would say try to do it that way but your gonna need some room to replace that broken stud (if you hafta drill) and yes you will hafta drain hydraulic fluid as the pump is on front of engine, I dont know exact weight of either component but your gonna need something bigger than a shop cherry picker to handle the engine.

Steve,
I know of a guy doing it on a 1010, and not pulling the unit all of the way out. He just slid everything ahead enough to get the coupler out and put the new one in. Probably about 6". I am sure you will have to stand on your head, and 3 arms would help, but it is an idea.
