A few days ago I saw a ? on here about Cat 3204 engine and if it could be bored. we have one that needs refresing and we were quoted $5000 (ouch) so i was looking in the factory service manual today and it listed the factory bore as 4.502 +or- and a max bore of 4.548 so i called the cat dealer and asked about it and they sell oversized pistons of 20 thou. and 40 thou. over at about $160 each plus rings with bearings and gaskets the dealer parts rep and I came up with about $1200 for all the parts. Less machine work and labor. but even if we had to buy the service manual for all the rebuild specks it still would not be anywhere near $5000

the 3204 is really half of a 3208 engine. I've gotten bearings and rings from truck engine suppliers, and a lot cheaper than from Cat..... ...

Murray Did they compare rebuilding your eng, to cat rebuild exch? I would go that way if you use the mach to make a living. Other wise go the way you say. Cat reman's are good+ warranty. If you get an exch. hang onto your eng till you get all the parts off it you need, then take it in for credit.
PS. I replied to Tom about his steering clutch's,
think you did too. Wonder how he made out?
Good luck Bob

Yes we Ck. and thought about using the reman. exch it was around 5000 but it would have a warranty. But before we did we bought a 97 D5c with 3046 engine a lot more dozer but still small enough for little jobs. anyway we sold the D3 to a local retired farmer as is (the tracks are cat SALT with one season)and I was cking for him as the best way to go. He may or may not have the engine done it just uses a lot of oil. I really liked the machine it was a real overachiver. We have the cat service manual and it is vary complet with vary detailed instruction so anyone with machanical ability should be able to rebild one.

Hi Murray. If it run's good and uses a little oil
he may get a lot of use out of it as is, for what he needs.
Talk to you later.
Bob
