How do you know if the steering clutches need repair or will in the very near future need repair?

Second thought, see you are looking to buy. Properly working and adj. steering clutches should steer with a light toe pressure, not heavy foot pressure. Watch out for a peddal that hits the floor! Should go slightly more than 1/2 way down and be even. Some had brake linkage adj. too long, If brakes were adj. to proper height all the play was in the linkage instead of between the drum and band,= ground up brake drum. These should all be corrected by now but watch out.
A good test of this is to tighten up the brake adj. as much as poss. and look for no peddal travel. Hard steering is usually a worn out roller bearing on the end of the steering valve spool, repair = updated valves with heavier rollers. Any more /comon back.
Good luck Bob

the steering cluches on our D3 Were hydraulic actuated and had no machanical linkage to the cluch. the brakes were machanical. As they only built 151 machines after ours be for the started the D3b the main change was to hang the steering cluch pedels from the dash (the D3 was in the floor)and I belive the D3b had wet cluches. if it does and you are woried I would have an oil sample analysis done that will tell more than any poking and proding will without tearing it down. Our D3 had 6670 hours on it and we never had a drop of proublems with the steering. and we just sold it for 11000 glad they didn't know about this machine. The D3 series are a very dependable machines. never had any major repairs and the parts were almost allways next day.

Sorry Murray. I get the feeling I confused things, just mentioned this because it did exist.
As an owner operator you could detect this problem right away and correct things before dammage occured, a lot didn't. This only affected machines like your new one not your old one.
Probably don't need to say this as you know your machines very well but there are a lot of people servicing these machines that don't know about changing the steering clutch oil, found one once that had only a cup of oil in it, guess they didn't know were to fill it. I they weren't good machines there wouldn' be so many around.
I could communicate better standing by the dozer talking looking and pointing.Bob

Hi Murray. This was a problem with hanging peddals and wet clutches, Poor linkage adj. = problems. It was resolved, Bin there done that. I know of what I speak. I have seen so many I do not know the exact #, show me the IRON. How ever I think the problems have been worked out of the system.

Campro. Probably only control valve end, but don't want to jump to conclusions. Tell us what is or is not happening.
Be around for an hr or two. Bob
