After years of use and abuse, I decided to go through my 340. It got everything; New engine, clutch, steering clutchs, undercarriage etc.etc. When I got done, I filled the case with fluid and put in a new filter. It sounded like it was starving for fluid. I changed the filter and snaked out the case suction tube, it still made noise. I put in a new pump, suction tube and seal. It still sang... I removed the filter and re-filled the case, the noise was gone. I removed the spring loaded plug from the screen strainer which seems to have cured the problem. But, I worry that the screen may be over worked and fail. I am also not comfortable with the amount of foam produced in the fluid. Can anyone tell me if I have missed something?

The starving for oil situation might possiby have been the pump priming up. Check also to see if your relief valve is weak. You just replaced a pump that might be closer to specs than your ald one was. Cant remember if that pump has the plate on the back or not. Where power steering pump goes on for ag tractors. If so make sure orings are in it. Make sure all spool valves are centered also and not bleeding through return. Then last check to make sure its not the oil doing it. I put new oil in my T340 one time and got fifteen minutes of running then lost all hydralics. Had mixed 2 brands of oil that clabbered like cottage cheese.

Thanks Galen for the return. The pump was replaced because of the noise. As it turns out, I probably didn't need to change it. I checked the relief valve and it still registers 2100 psi. which is what the book calls for. I tend to agree with you about the oil. I just don't feel good about it. I'm going to change it and put Hy-Trans in it. If it works, it's just more evidence that trying to save $25 on oil cost me $700 in new parts and a whole lot of aggrivation.

Al Im still in the middle of trying to fix a simular problem on my T 340. I removed the mounting flange and the pump(cessna 12gpm). A lot of oil poured out of the transmission. But there was no filter between the pump and the hole in caseing where the suction tube from the pump goes into. Did some one remove the filter or is this not where the filter is located. The parts book shows a filter I just assumed that is where it goes. Im really lost. Thanks Jim

340 AL, hi
i know you replaced the suction tube and seal twice but could it be that it still pulling in air on the suction side? that would explain the foaming. the 340 had two different pump options. if i remember correctly the hydraulic pump on my 340 drott loader used the transmission lub pump to fill an area around the hydraulic pump filter. could it be that the lub pump is not properly filling the suction side of the hydraulic pump? i can't find my manuals so i'm operating from memory, sorry. if you don't mind me asking, where did get parts?

Hi Rhudson and thanks for the interest. Mine has the IH 3040 loader. It has the Cesna 17 GPM pump mounted in the clutch housing case driven by the PTO gear. There is no additional pump. I've been told that if it were sucking air, the hydrolics would be jerky and slow. This is not the case. I'm just as happy about that for that would mean a crack in the clutch housing case.
With the exception of some machine shop work on the idler wheel arms and a sun gear disc, most of the parts were supplied from CaseIH or Komatsu. I was surprised that Komatsu keeps such an inventory. The track idler pulley isn't available from anyone. The Case 350 idler pully has the same dimensions but I had to fabricate a new stand. The rollers were supplied by Berco.

I am glad to hear that you have had success in fixing up your T-340. I have heard that it is difficult to find the parts to build these back up. I hope to purchase one of these one day. I have the F 340 rowcrop diesel tractor. They have quite a bit of power for their size. I was wondering what kind of things that you have been able to do with this tractor. Hope you get the hydrolic issue resolved.
Keith

Hi Keith! I still use the tractor to clear land. I traded a Cub for it in 1989. It had a 3 point hitch and a PTO. The guy I got it from was using it to bush hog. He was much happier with the cub and I got to knock down trees. I now live in Fla. and there isn't much competition for the old machine. It's something fun to do in my retirement. I've also got a 340 utility.
