I have a 1983 D3B Cat with 3 forward 3 reverse transmission. I need to know if the clutch compartment is supposed to have oil in it. Underneath the clutch compartment is a 3/8 square head bolt for brake adjustment and a big drain hole right nect to it. Does anyobdy know if this machine is supposed to run dry or wet?

Campro I think they should be wet. Some b's were made with the old trans 1 rev and dry clutches but I havn't seen one myself. Pull the large drain plugs out of the clutch compartments and see what comes out.( good to change oil anyway)
Take off the back pannel under the batt, clean off the clutch covers and look for two fill plugs,11/2"
wrench size. Look for 1/4" pipe plug on each side near the final drive plugs. These plugs are the full levels. A lot of people don't know about filling the oil clutches I have found some with only a cup full of oil in them.
Good luck.Bob

I do not see a 1/4 pipe plug near the final drives and no 1 1/2' fill plugs on the clutch cover panels. However, there is a 1 1/2" drain plug on the bottom of the clutch compartment. There was no oil in either clutch compartment when opening. Is there any other way to tell?

Campro. If there are no plugs on top they must be dry. The dry clutches have a 3/8 support bolt for the brake band on the bottom, with a square head, I believe you said you had a bolt on the bottom under each clutch, the wet clutch has a wrapround band and and no support bolt.

D3B's came both wet and dry. If you pulled the plugs on the bottom of the cases and nothing came out and they didn't look like they ever had oil in them, they are probably the dry clutches. If they were dry you definitely don't want to put oil in them. I don't know of any way to tell if they were wet or dry from the factory without opening the case and actually looking at the lining. You could try www.acmoc.org and see if anybody there knows another way to tell.

The clutch case compartment is open. Is there any way to tell by look at the clutches without having to pull the clutches out?
