D3B CLUTCHES REBUILDING?

I have a 1983 D3B cat dozer and we have open the clutch case and can see the brakes and the clutch yoke and bearing. We checked the bearing using a dental mirror and there are no seal on it and the bearing cage has fallen apart. The balls are all loose in the bearing cage now. Since we need to pull the clutch now to replace the bearing, how do we check the clutch when we have it out to see if we need to replace the clutch pack? Or is the any way to tell with it still in place? How much should it cost to get the clutch rebuilt by Cat or is it something I can do myself at my machine shop? Any response would be helpful.

Campro. You probably only need throw out bearings. You have to take the clutch out for that then you measure the stack height to see the wear. The bearing job would be best done by a dealer after you take the clutches out yourself.
The stub shafts need to be pressed out and back in again, any more than 10 ton and the clutch hub could crack, at the tapered spline. If you can take the clutches out your self it would be good to take both out and do the bearings on them now.
Does the brake band wrap right around the clutch, and made up of three thin bands? Or is it one solid piece and not go completely around the clutch? When you are at it check the small ball bearings on the end of the steering valves, they wear and fall apart too, would be good to change now as well. To get the clutches out it helps to slack the bolts that hold the fuel and hyd tanks to the frame, this will give you more room to get the clutches out. The clutches are likely fine, dry bands may be worn you'l see when out.

Do I need to spread both flanges apart after removing bolts or will the clutch just lift right out after removing the bolts on both flanges?

Campro. When you get all of the bolts out( both flanges, inside(bevelgear side)& outside(final drive side)). The drum can be slid inwards and pinion flange outwards, freeing the clutch to lift. I will say this now, you probably have disconnected the brake band from the hook and ramp bracket(forget the corr terminology) and removed the linkage down to the brake, also the rod from the piston to the release yoke. Tie onto the brake band to lift before prying the drum and flange apart.
The stack height means the width of the stack of clutch plates and discs as they are when you slide them out of the brake drum. Take a drum with you if you take the clutches in for new bearings, if they impact the nut on the stub shaft tight, the discs and plates get scrambled and the drum is hard to put back on.
Call your dealer and ask for a price first, they should have firm price for that. Say "replace throw out bearings".Later Bob

Brake is a solid band around the clutch. Can you advise to what dealer will charge to replace bearing and clutch pack approximately?

What is the stack height supposed to be on the clutches and where do you measure it from?
