I just got my first crawler dozer, a "1986" (I think)Caterpillar D3B serial #27Y04543. I bought it at Ritchie Brothers Auction in Perris, Ca. I am trying to figure out if it has wet or dry clutches. The dealer records show them as dry. I met a guy at the auction that worked for the contractor that serviced the unit. He said that one of the guys at work said the clutches were wet because he remembered changing the oil.
Now keep in mind that this is my first unit, I am not an operator, and I do not pretend to know anything about dozers or this machine. When I operated it for the first time, at about 11 p.m., in the dark, I had what I perceive to be a problem. When I step on the right pedal it quickly turns to the right, when I step on the center pedal it stops, but when I step on the left pedal it may or may not turn to the left. It seems to be worse in 3rd gear than in 1st gear.
I rented a 22 flatbed and took the D3 up to my ranch last night from Perris, Ca. Round trip was about 800 miles. The ranch that I have is remote and 85 miles from me. I took the D3 up there thinking it was ready to go to work, So I need a few ideas on what to check when I go back up to my ranch. Thanks Steve

Hi Steve, Went through this with CAMPRO, check his posts and rep. I might miss something. Take out the flood plate, disconnect the rod to the cam in front of the steering valve. the rod is 3/8" dia. and moves when you push the peddal down.
Move the cam so you can feel the small bearing on the end of the steering valve, it is likely your problem. Take the valve out and replace the bearing if it's bad. From what you say I think the clutch is not getting fully released.
This should keep you going for the weekend.
Comon back with what you find.
PS. If you have oil clutches there should be a 1/4" pipe plug on each side of the steering clutch case near the final drive plug this is the level plug to fill there should be a big plug on each clutch cover 11/2" wrench size. If they are dry you will not have these plugs.
Later Bob.
